Inflation declined from 12 percent annually in 2001 to 6 percent in 2004, and the economy grew by around 4 percent per annum during 2001 to 2005. During 2006–07 Indonesia was struck by a series of natural disasters, including an earthquake and tsunami in Java in May and July 2006 and earthquakes in Sumatra in March and September 2007. Inflation started to reaccelerate in 2005, hitting 14 percent by year end. Growth in labor productivity has been nonexistent for a decade. Some observers feel that Indonesia is hobbled by its poor infrastructure. Public infrastructure investment has been declining for years. It was about $3 billion in 2003, down from $16 billion in 1996. The road system is a mess, half the country’s population has no access to electricity, the number of brownouts is on the rise as the electricity grid ages, and nearly 99 percent of the population lacks access to modern sewerage facilities. The tsunami that ravaged the coast of Sumatra in late 2004 only made matters worse. Mirroring the decline in public investment has been a slump in private investment. Investment in the country’s all-important oil industry fell from $3. 8 billion in 1996 to just $187 million in 2002. Oil production has declined even though oil prices are at record highs. Investment in mining has also fallen from $2. 6 billion in 1997 to $177 million in 2003. Implications: Indonesias recent economic and political collapse is a stark example of the outright failure of a development paradigm promoting large-scale economic growth without political, social, legal, and environmental safeguards. It is facing a humanitarian and environmental crisis that current domestic and international efforts do not adequately address. After the Suharto’s fall, Indonesia became more democratic and decentralized which were likely to confront corruption. However, corruption has gotten worse as institutions of democracy were still unstable during the critical transition (Smith, 2003). A widely agreed structural factor underlying corruption in Indonesia is a political system which vests an inordinate amount of power in the hands of the executive, and the president in particular. There is no balance between the executive, legislative and judicial arms of power. Commentators differ in the emphasis they give to other factors which characterize the environment of corruption. Lopa (1998) highlights the greed of those in positions of power, who are often already wealthy individuals, combined with a weak system of law enforcement where investigations are poorly carried out and few prosecutions are made. Rose-Ackerman (1997:19–20) argues that incentives for corruption are provided by the high level of funds and resources under the discretionary control of officials, combined with poor formal laws on corruption, the lack of credibility of law enforcers, and the poor conditions of civil service employment. Other contributing factors include the limited extent of auditing and monitoring within government, the lack of public awareness of government activities and a tendency not to file complaints, the low level of press freedom and the controls preventing individuals from forming non-government organizations, and the poor level of active political opposition. Consequences: First, corruption imposed a high burden in business transactions, since virtually all transactions with government bureaucrats require huge illicit payments. It is good to assume that many businesses who could not afford the high cost of bribing government officials either move to the underground economy, which ofter requires less â€Å"corruption – tax† or go out of business together. Second the corruption is also has a huge impact on the culture of Indonesians. It becomes a norm right now that any dealings between citizens and government officials have to be sealed with payment of bribes. Many social commentators have concluded that Indonesia has a culture that tolerates corruptions, in which social behaviors and cultural norms have become so ingrained and so tolerating of corrupt behavior that it is virtually impossible to fight it. Third, corruption has destroyed confidence among citizens toward government officials and bureaucrats, which has reduced their authority among citizens, leading to the significant increase in the level of social anomie and powerlessness among the least well – off members of the society and higher crime rates, violence abuse, decline in social solidarity, etc. Finally, corruption has been blamed as one of the cause of social grievances that are widespread in many parts of Indonesia that if not being addressed immediately, could bring the Indonesian state to the brink of collapse. What is required to reduce these risks? 1. Dollar yields highest risk. The study found that many Asia-Pacific firms showed significant exposure to fluctuations in one or more of the world’s four major currencies: the U. S. ollar, the euro (deutschmark prior to 1999), the Japanese yen and the British pound. Some of the greatest vulnerabilities resulted from fluctuations in the dollar which, over the study period, impacted 54 percent in Indonesia. The researchers pointed out that â€Å"a potentially wide range of firms were exposed to rate movements regardless of their direct financial exposure. † As might be expected, currency fluctuations affected the profitability of companies whose financial assets and liabilities (most notably debt) were held in f oreign currencies and that had foreign-based operations. However, possibly less obvious was the significant impact that exchange rates had on companies with no foreign currency exposures but who competed with companies that did. Such companies could increase their market share as a result of a favorable exchange rate movement to the detriment of the firm with no apparent foreign currency exposure. Not surprisingly, the greatest period of vulnerability was the Asian financial crisis, which occurred during the third study segment (1996-1998). More than half of the studied companies in Indonesia were exposed to the dollar, and about a quarter of the firms in Singapore were exposed to the yen. 2. Risk in insurance rush Increased insurance investment in Indonesia also means heightened exposure to the risks associated with insuring countries that are vulnerable to natural catastrophes. Home to 17,000 islands that straddle the Pacific Ocean’s volcanic â€Å"ring of fire,† the vast archipelago sits on fault lines that make it more susceptible to seismic activity. In October 2010 alone, the country endured an earthquake, tsunami and volcano in two locations. â€Å"A lack of detailed historical claims data [following catastrophes] makes it very difficult for insurers to model, and therefore appropriately price the risks,† Dean Carrigan, a partner at Australia-based law firm Clyde Co, told Insurance Insight. â€Å"If there is sufficient data it can be priced, but with the current low levels of insurance penetration, the question is would anyone buy it? With 6 months of reviewing hard, the day for my board came, I really strive hard to make it good and there luckily I passed the boeard examination. And now, still I am just beginning my life to be a real help and a partner for this society to change for the better by providing a better role as a professional. T his eventful day in your lives and as you go on separate ways; wouldn’t it be nice that one day in the not so distant future you will meet again: some maybe with great tales of exploits and adventure, some of heartaches and pains, some maybe of self realizations and musings†¦ but wouldn’t it be wonderful that in that much awaited reunion you in your selves have found your sense of inner peace? A peace rooted in the fact that you have in one way or another have done your share for the advancement of the society in which you are an essential part? If your answer to this question by that time is a big â€Å"YES†; it is only then my dear graduates that you can really proudly say that you, â€Å"The Graduate† has become a true partner in transforming our society; that you have become a true catalyst for social change! Macbeth: Serpentine Imagery Essay -- essays research papers

The snake has long been used as a symbol of sly subtlety. A serpent’s presence has been characterized by cunning cynicism dating as far back as biblical times, when the snake persuaded Eve to eat the forbidden fruit of Eden’s garden. Even the phrase â€Å"snake in the grass† expresses latency. Shakespeare uses this treacherous reptile in Macbeth to convey the same evil. In his poetic prose, Shakespeare may not speak of a character’s malevolence directly; rather, he alludes to it through serpentine imagery. Macbeth contains four separate images of this type. What is their purpose, and what do they signify? A deep undercurrent of meaning flows beneath each image. In act one, scene five, Lady Macbeth tries to instill invisible evil into herself and her husband in preparation for Duncan’s murder. She asks for supernatural unsexing, for a thickening of her blood that will â€Å"stop up th’ access and passage to remorse.† She fears her husband is too weak to murder Duncan, which she believes is Macbeth’s only path to the crown. After tauntingly questioning her husband’s manhood, she convinces him to follow her gory plan and gives him instructions to do so. â€Å"To beguile the time, look like the time. Bear welcome in your eye, your hand, your tongue. Printed Books vs. E-Books Essay

We are currently in an environment where more people are reading online newspapers, books and magazines than ever before†¦ No longer do we need to sit on the train or bus getting inky fingers while trying to tentatively turn the page of the paper in the crowded carriage, nor are we lumbered by having to carry around our books or magazines all day long. Instead, with a quick flick of a switch on our e-reader, tablet or mobile device, we are instantly able to access a vast array of literature, idle gossip and daily news, all in an easily readable, bright and vivid way. We do not need to fret about adequate lighting, or if our paper is causing our seated neighbor an annoyance on the morning journey, we no longer worry about forgetting to buy our favourite magazine or pick up the novel from the bedside table. Regardless of all this, the question arises: Do we need print books or newspapers anymore? Asked about reading text files on a handheld device, defenders of print proclaim their love for the printed word, the feel of the paper, the experience of holding, owning and reading a physical book. They also say that a physical book is something one can take pleasure in, just seeing it on their shelf. They also mention that reading on electronic devices has bad impact on eyes, that it is tiring for eyes. Other advantage of printed books is their accessibility. The fact of the matter is that the majority of people in the world don’t have Internet access. But people in favor of e-books have different opinion on this topic. First advantage of digital books is portability. The wonderful thing about electronic text is that it takes up virtually no room, in both a physical and digital sense. If we have a storage card, we can walk around with at least a dozen books, and probably many more than that. Even if we don’t have a storage card, you can still walk around with a fair collection of three to six books (again, depending on book size and available memory). In many situations it’s hard to carry even one book around with you. The storage abilities of most e-books allow readers to carry a reasonable collection of reading materials and/or reference texts. Second point in favor of e-books is variety of features. For starters, since most e-books are in some form of digital text file, we can search the text for words or phrases. This is helpful when we want to find a quote or another specific section of the book. This can cut minutes, if not hours, off of wild goose chases for particular passages. Additionally, digital formats can be duplicated forever without decay or any real expense. This duplication ability can make it possible for us to share books with our friends without ever having to actually give up one of our possessions. Of course, assuming copy protection doesn’t get in the way. Next advantage mentioned by e-books followers is that they are in fact easy to read. The electronic format offers readers even more benefits over traditional paper books. eBooks can be read in a variety of lighting situations, and due to the backlighted screens that most Palm computers have, we can read an ebook in most low or no light situations, such as on the subway, during nighttime road trips, or in bed when we don’t want to disturb your partner. Also, the readability of an e-book won’t degrade over time. The pages won’t crumble because of high acid content, the binding can never break, and there can be no variations in the ink. Despite being criticized for their inconvenience and for being hard to read, e-books are often more convenient than their paper based counterparts. Regardless of future developments in e-reading technology, I think the book market will have plenty of room for paper books for quite some time, they won’t be replaced, like vinyl records have not been supplanted by CD’s. There always will be people who will buy printed book.

Gukurahundi -- Attempted Genocide in Zimbabwe

Gukurahundi refers to the attempted genocide of the Ndebele by Robert Mugabes Fifth Brigade soon after Zimbabwe gained independence. Beginning in January 1983, Mugabe waged a campaign of terror against the people in Matabeleland in the western part of the country. The Gukurahundi massacres are one of the darkest times in the country’s history since its independence -- between 20,000 and 80,000 civilians were killed by the Fifth Brigade. History of the Shona and Ndebele There have long been strong feelings between the majority Shona people of Zimbabwe and the Ndebele people in the south of the country. It dates back to the early 1800s when the Ndebele were pushed from their traditional lands in what is now South Africa by the Zulu and Boer. The Ndebele arrived in what is now known as Matabeleland, and in turn pushed out or required tribute from the Shona living in the region. Independence Comes to Zimbabwe Independence came to Zimbabwe under the leadership of two distinct groups: the Zimbabwe African Peoples Union (Zapu) and the Zimbabwe African National Union (Zanu). Both had emerged from the National Democratic Party in the early 60s. ZAPU was led by Joshua Nkomo, a Ndebelel nationalist. ZANU was led by the Reverend Ndabaningi Sithole, a Ndau, and Robert Mugabe, a Shona. Mugabe's Rise Mugabe quickly rose to prominence and gained the post of prime minister on independence. Joshua Nkomo was given a ministerial post in Mugabes cabinet, but was removed from office in February 1982 -- he was accused of planning to overthrow Mugabe. At the time of independence, North Korea offered to train Zimbabwes army and Mugabe agreed. More than 100 military experts arrived and began work with the Fifth Brigade. These troops were then deployed in Matabeleland, ostensibly to crush pro-Nkomo ZANU forces, who were, of course, Ndebele. Early Rain That Washes Away Chaff Gukurahundi, which in Shona means early rain that washes away chaff, lasted for four years. It was mostly brought to an end when Mugabe and Nkomo reached a conciliation on December  22, 1987, and they signed a unity agreement. Although thousands were killed in Matabeleland and the southeast of Zimbabwe, there was little international recognition of the extensive human rights abuses (called by some an attempted genocide). It was 20 years before a report was undertaken by the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace and the Legal Resources Foundation of Harare. The Explicit Orders of Mugabe Mugabe has revealed little since the 1980s and what he has said was a mixture of denial and obfuscation, as reported in 2015 by TheGuardian.com in the article New documents claim to prove Mugabe ordered Gukurahundi killings. The closest he came to officially taking responsibility was after Nkomo died in 1999.  Mugabe then described the early 1980s as a â€Å"moment of madness† – an unclear statement that he has never repeated. During an interview with a South African talk show host, Mugabe blamed the Gukurahundi murders on armed bandits that were coordinated by Zapu and a few Fifth Brigade soldiers. However, recorded correspondence from his colleagues reveals that in fact â€Å"not only was Mugabe fully aware of what was going on† but the Fifth Brigade was acting â€Å"under Mugabe’s explicit orders.†
